David Spratt: The current science on global warming and options to address it

David Spratt explaining a Climate History graph

At DCAN’s Annual General Meeting 13 November 2025, climate researcher David Spratt delivered a powerful and deeply sobering message about the state of the climate crisis.

Spratt explained that we have already passed 1.5 °C of global warming and several dangerous tipping points are now in motion. Yet government policy and media coverage continue to focus mainly on positive stories about solar rebates and battery uptake. While these are important, they do not reflect the full scale or urgency of the crisis we face.

He argued that avoiding climate and ecological collapse now requires action on three interconnected fronts, what he calls reduction, removal and repair:

1. Zero emissions now – stop adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
3. Carbon drawdown – remove the excess carbon already there.
3. Cooling the planet – repair Earth’s energy balance to bring temperatures back within safe limits and prevent further tipping points.

Spratt was clear that incremental change is no longer enough. What is needed is urgent, coordinated and collective action at every level of society.

That is where DCAN comes in. We are a community of people working locally for real climate action, from advocating for stronger government policy to helping households electrify and cut emissions.

If you want to be part of a collective that matches the scale of the challenge with the power of community, join us. Together we can be part of the solution.
