November 2025 Dispatch

We need stronger laws to protect nature and climate!

Our federal nature laws (EPBC Act) are broken. They don't protect our environment or our climate. Federal Labor is trying to rush through new laws which are deeply flawed. We must make sure that these laws are strengthened. Please take action now by calling and emailing Ged Kearney, MP for Cooper, and Victorian ALP Senators. For more information, contacts and tips go to this link.

(Many thanks to Environmental Justice Australia for this excellent scorecard)

DCAN Annual Report 2025

It was with great pleasure that we presented the DCAN Annual Report for 2025 at our Annual General Meeting last Thursday 13th November. We hope you enjoy reading about the incredible range of activities we tackled during the year, such as setting up a new home electrification advisory service, film screenings, art exhibitions, submission writing, conversations with residents and students and working hard to influence our elected representatives at the local, state and federal levels of government.

If any of our activities are of interest to you please let us know and we can match you to a working group or specific project.

The science on global warming and our failure to address it

At DCAN’s Annual General Meeting last Thursday, climate researcher David Spratt delivered a powerful and deeply sobering message about the state of the climate crisis.

Spratt explained that we have already passed 1.5 °C of global warming and several dangerous tipping points are now in motion. Yet government policy and media coverage continue to focus mainly on positive stories about solar rebates and battery uptake. While these are important, they do not reflect the full extent or urgency of the crisis we face.

To read a summary of David's talk and view the slides he used in his presentation click here. A similar presentation is given by David in a YouTube video 'Cooling or Collapse'.

Neighbourhood Houses - Keep Our Doors Open campaign

Neighbourhood Houses are the backbone of our communities and yet they are under incredible financial stress following many years of erosion of their core funding. Right now many are struggling to keep their doors open. DCAN is supporting Bridge Darebin (Preston and Thornbury Neighbourhood Houses) in their campaign calling on the State Government to increase funding so they can continue to serve our communities and keep their doors open for everyone.

DCAN is a regular user of the Bridge meeting rooms and community halls. We greatly appreciate Bridge Darebin's support which enables us to meet and plan our climate activities. Please take a moment to add your voice to the campaign by completing an e-postcard here: POSTCARD LINK

Electrify your home event at Preston Library

The DCAN information table at Preston library's electrification event last week (13th November) looked stunning! More importantly, DCAN volunteers Lesley and Linda had lots of conversations with people wanting to take steps to fully electrify their homes. Luckily for DCAN we have our own inhouse energy expert, Graham Moore, who has volunteered to give his time to provide advice to Darebin residents wanting to know more about the home electrification journey.

Are you a Darebin resident looking for advice? Book a time to chat with Graham - it's free!
